Physical Risks:

- Heavy bleeding
- Damage to the cervix or uterus
- Increased risk of infertility
- Increased risk of future miscarriage

Emotional Risks:
Some women feel immediate relief after the abortion while others have negative emotions
immediately or years later
Several factors determine the emotional reaction you may experience:
- Stage of the pregnancy
- Age of the woman
- Whether she feels pressured to have the abortion
- Previous feelings about abortion
Some reactions women experience are:
- Depression
- Guilt/Shame
- Sadness
- Self destructive behaviours
- Alcohol or drug abuse
- Anniversary reaction
- Flashbacks/nightmares

Post-Abortion Support
For the woman who is experiencing emotional distress after an abortion, the Centre offers a one-on-one, confidential peer counseling program. The book “A Season To Heal” is utilized during the sessions.
Among the topics discussed are:
- post-abortion stress
- the pre-pregnant woman
- the abortion
- anger
- forgiveness
- reconciliation
The program can take from 9-14 weeks depending on the needs of the client. Each client is asked to sign a disclaimer stating that the support they receive is not intended as a substitute for professional counseling.
